NCC to award N9m research grants to start-ups

The Nigerian Communications Commission is set to award research grants to the tune of N9m to three deserving Nigerian start-ups with proposals for adaptable digital solutions for containing the impact of COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

A statement signed by the Director, Public Affairs, NCC, Dr Ikechukwu Adinde, said the selection of the companies followed a careful evaluation of 282 entries in the NCC COVID-19 Virtual Hackathon.

The entries from digital innovation start-ups and Small and Medium Enterprises were assessed by an evaluation committee set up by the commission.

The commission said it instituted the programme to award research grants to support start-ups and digital SME’s with adaptable innovative digital solutions that could address present and future impacts of pandemic and epidemic diseases in Nigeria.

The statement said the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami, would give a keynote address and present prizes to the winners.

He would be supported by the Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the NCC, Prof Adeolu Akande and the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Office, Prof Umar Danbatta, with other members of the board of commissioners of NCC in attendance.
