FG, Labour leaders meets today

The Federal Government will meet with the leadership of Organised Labour over increase in petrol and electricity tariff hikes.

The Deputy Director, Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Labour, Charles Akpan confirmed the meeting on Wednesday.

The meeting would hold at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The statement said: “The Honourable Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige will be hosting a meeting with the Organised Labour.

The Meeting is scheduled to hold on Thursday, 24th September 2020, at the Banquet hall, Presidential Vila by 3 pm.”

The government team led by Ngige last Tuesday failed to reach an understanding with Labour over recent decisions taken regarding increase in electricity tariff and petrol prices.

After about eight- hour discussion, the meeting ended in deadlock with Labour issuing an ultimatum to commence an indefinite strike.

The Trade Union Congress (TUC), which had earlier planned its nationwide strike/ protest for Wednesday 23, September 2020, shifted it to Monday when the two-week ultimatum by the Nigeria Labour Congress expires.

On Tuesday, the National Executive Council (NEC) of the NLC ratified the decision of the Central Working Committee of the NLC to stage a protest at the end of the two-week ultimatum issued government.

The Organised Labour may proceed with planned strike if the Federal Government fails to outline palliative measures to cushion the effect of the increases on citizens at tomorrow’s parley.
