2021 Budget: Health Gets N1trn, Not N43bn – Gbajabiamila
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, yesterday said contrary to reports that the healthcare sector got N43bn allocation in the 2021 budget proposal, it got N1 trillion.
His spokesman, Lanre Lasisi, quoted him as saying this in Abuja while receiving the leadership of the Nigerian Medical Association on a courtesy visit.
“On the increase in budget allocation, I believe it has been increased to some extent. I don’t know the exact figure right now, but we’ll look at it. If there’s need to review it further, we’ll do that,” the speaker said.
He said the house was taking various measures to improve health workers’ welfare.
He said the house would look at the issue of the outstanding allowances of health workers.
Earlier, NMA President Prof. Innocent Ujah had called for increase in the retirement age for doctors and consultants. He sought 70 as retirement age for consultants and 65 for others.
He also called on the house to provide good legislation for the health sector as well as enhance the remuneration and allowances of medical personnel.
