PSG want Lionel Messi’s contract extended amid Barcelona rumours

Lionel Messi has been a hot topic in Barcelona this week, with Xavi reportedly keen on bringing him back to Camp Nou next year.

The Barça head coach has publicly stated his desire to re-sign Messi recently, and the Argentine’s links with his former club are growing increasingly strong. It has, in turn, put immense pressure on PSG, especially with Messi’s current contract expiring in 2023.

In light of recent events, PSG have contacted Messi in their bid to convince the attacker to renew his contract at Parc des Princes.

This has been reported by Fabrizio Romano, who suggests PSG are increasingly keen on convincing the Argentine international to extend his contract. They see him as a vital asset for the club, despite the attacker’s rather underwhelming debut campaign in Ligue 1.

However, PSG’s quest to extend Messi’s contract could be affected by Barcelona’s desire to re-sign the attacker.

Romano claims there have been no official negotiations between PSG and Messi over a contract extension. The 35-year-old is aware of the interest from Barcelona, which may cloud his judgement, in regard to a decision over his future.

Speculations have linked the footballing superstar to a move to Major League Soccer in the past, but with Barcelona determined to offer him a second stage and reconcile their relationship with the striker, there remains a layer of uncertainty over this saga.

Barça, for their part, are aware of their financial situation. But they are confident they can make up for their investment through the massive economic incentives Messi offers, especially while playing for the Blaugrana.

The additional prospect of seeing Messi sharing the attacking line with Robert Lewandowski may offer further economic advantages, though it remains to be seen whether the Argentine himself entertains a return to Camp Nou next year.
