Cyber Terrorism; Ondo NSCDC Meets ONDO Banker’s Committee.

In line with the mandate of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps as enshrined in  NSCDC ACT 2003 and 2007 Amended with the empowerment to fight terrorism, the State Commandant Engr Olatundun Olayinka paid a working visit to the Branch Controller, Alhaji Yusuf Fatai Adebare of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Ondo State branch where it was agreed that the Corps financial crime team should meet with the banker’s committee in the State.

The Banker’s committee, a forum of all banks operating within the State held it’s quarterly meeting on 27th July, 2023 with NSCDC team on ground to address and arouse the consciousness of the banks regarding their roles in the fight against organized and syndicate crimes as well as itemized various challenges faced in the course of investigation activities at the banks.

The roles of the banks in ensuring their systems are not used for money laundering, terrorism, financing of proliferation of arms despite their quest and competition for customers. Existence of adequate provisions of laws such as money Laundering Prevention Act , Terrorism Prevention Act, Cybercrime Act; which every banker is expected to be conversant with and ensure total compliance amongst others were discussed.

Some investigative activities challenges encountered  by law enforcement agencies at the banks ranging from; delay in responses to investigation requests, provision of Point of Sales/Web transactions details, challenges involved in accounts and wallets of Fintech companies and non compliance with cumulative limit of transactions were well discussed.

From the Interactive session, it is hoped that with a strong collaborative effort between the banks and security agencies, there will be a sustained breakthrough in the fight against cyber and financial crimes in the country.
