The Nigerian Army Officers Wives Association (NAOWA) on Monday distributed bags of rice, oil and other condiments to 5,000 barracks women as a palliative measure to cushion the impact of the current hardship.

The association made the distribution to army units and formations nationwide and Army Headquarters, Garrison in Abuja.

The beneficiaries are wives of soldiers, widows of fallen heroes and other vulnerable members of the barracks community.

The president of NAOWA and wife of the Chief of Army Staff, Maria Lagbaja, said the outreach was organised to demonstrate her commitment, love and solidarity for the barracks community.

Mrs Lagbaja said the decision was also to support the Muslim brothers and sisters who just commenced Ramadan and Christians currently observing Lent.

She said it was a season that required everyone to come together in love to show support for each other.

According to her, it is an opportunity for them to strengthen the bond of love, unity and respect that define them as one great community.

“We are gathered here to celebrate and share in the joy of giving and supporting one another as one great community united in love.

“Accordingly, we will be giving out these food items; please accept these items as a symbol of NAOWA’s commitment and dedication to the betterment of the barracks community,” she said.

Mrs Lagbaja appreciated members of NAOWA and NASWA for their commitment to keeping the home front while their spouses were away carrying out their assigned duties.

One of the beneficiaries, Hadiza Abubakar, thanked NAOWA for the gesture, adding that the items would help in no small measure during Ramadan.

She said the present hardship had taken a toll on everyone, saying NAOWA had demonstrated its love and care for them through the donation.
