One Year After Mohbad’s Death: Killer Still Unknown, Body Left in Mortuary, No Autopsy Report Released

On Tuesday, September 12, 2023, the Nigerian music industry was rocked by the tragic and unexpected death of Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, a young and talented Afrobeats artiste with a promising future.

News of his passing sent shockwaves through the music community, leaving fans and followers of his unique Afro-prayer style in disbelief.

The circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death remain unclear, with various conflicting reports adding to the confusion. The 27-year-old was allegedly assaulted by individuals reportedly linked to his former record label, but the exact details leading to his demise are still murky.

One year later, the mystery of Mohbad’s death continues to cast a shadow over the Nigerian music industry. Investigations into his case have made little headway, and those responsible remain unidentified.

After his hasty burial, Mohbad’s body was exhumed by Nigerian authorities for further investigation and an autopsy. Unfortunately, these efforts have provided few answers. His remains still lie in the mortuary, and the autopsy results have yet to offer a definitive cause of death. A preliminary report from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) suggested a possible drug reaction, but the findings were inconclusive. Toxicology results detected the presence of diphenhydramine, a common antihistamine, but the concentration was not considered fatal. Additionally, an injury on Mohbad’s right forearm was noted, and his body had significantly decomposed by the time of exhumation.

The tragedy of Mohbad’s death has also unearthed tensions within his family. His father, Joseph Aloba, his mother, Abosede Aloba, and his widow, Wunmi, have struggled to cooperate in the pursuit of justice for the late singer. This division has been further complicated by a dispute over the inheritance of Mohbad’s assets. Questions have arisen about the paternity of his son, Liam, with his father, Joseph Aloba, calling for a DNA test and accusing Wunmi of infidelity.

The slow progress in resolving Mohbad’s case has sparked widespread concern about the value placed on human life in Nigeria, as well as the influence of power and money within the music industry.

Fans, fellow artists, and activists continue to call for justice, though their demands seem to go unheard. Prominent figures like Iyabo Ojo, Gistlover, VeryDarkMan, Kemi Olunloyo, and Yomi Fabiyi have been vocal in the campaign for answers. Recently, VeryDarkMan accused Iyabo Ojo of withholding crucial information, alleging that her Instagram account had been logged into Mohbad’s widow’s device. Ojo, in turn, has pointed to Naira Marley and Sam Larry as key suspects, though Kemi Olunloyo and VeryDarkMan have questioned whether focusing on Marley distracts from uncovering the real cause of Mohbad’s death.

As the first anniversary of his passing was commemorated on Thursday, Mohbad’s music remains a testament to his legacy.
