JUST IN: Police IG Orders Immediate Reopening of Rivers LG Secretariats
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed the immediate withdrawal of police officers previously deployed to seal off the 23 local government secretariats in Rivers State.
This announcement was made on Monday in a statement released by the Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Command, Grace Iringe-Koko. The directive is part of efforts to address the ongoing political situation in the state.
The newly appointed Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Bala Mustapha, relayed the IGP’s order, stating that all police personnel stationed at the local government secretariats would be withdrawn immediately.
According to the statement, this move aligns with the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to maintaining neutrality and ensuring the smooth operation of democratic institutions.
The statement also clarified that police officers would only return to the secretariats in the event of a crisis or significant disturbance, and emergency measures would be enacted to restore order if needed.
The Rivers State Command reassured the public of its commitment to peace and security across the state, emphasizing that it will continue to uphold professionalism in executing its duties.
