An Assistant Inspector Superintendent of Police has been killed during a crisis in Agege area of Lagos State on Saturday morning.

It was gathered that some irate commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as Okada riders have been blamed for the death of the police officer.

The ASP was said to have led a team of Police officers to an accident scene around WEMCO Junction when the incident happened.

Sources said the team had come under heavy attack when they tried to evacuate a truck that knocked down an Okada rider.

The police officers met stiff resistance from the irate Okada riders who insisted on setting the truck on fire.

Confirming the incident, the Lagos command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin said the killing of the ASP was unprovoked.

According to Hundeyin, the police had received a distress call at about 1.40 am on Saturday.

He said details from the distress call indicated that an accident involving a trailer and an Okada rider had occurred in the Agege area of Lagos.

Noting that the Okada rider in the accident, Hundeyin said, “On getting to the scene, the team met a large number of motorcycle riders who had gathered around the place.

“However, the patrol team in the process of evacuating the truck came under attack by the riders who insisted on torching the truck as a result of which one ASP, 46 years old was injured on the head and he died on the spot while the truck driver escaped.

The police also noted that five suspects have since been arrested and a manhunt for others is ongoing.
