Pro-Biafran activist, Simon Ekpa to remain in Finnish custody, trial scheduled for 2025
Finnish authorities have confirmed that Simon Ekpa, a prominent pro-Biafran activist, will remain in custody as his trial has been scheduled to begin in May 2025.
Ekpa was arrested earlier this year in Finland on allegations of terrorism-related activities and incitement to violence.
Mikko Laaksonen, Senior Detective Superintendent at Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation, disclosed that the district court has set May 2025 as the deadline for prosecutors to file possible charges against Ekpa.
“The investigation is ongoing, and further details cannot be disclosed at this time,” Laaksonen stated.
He added that remand hearings could be reconsidered every two weeks if requested by the parties involved, although no immediate changes to Ekpa’s detention are anticipated.
Ekpa’s arrest was part of a broader investigation involving four other suspects. Finnish authorities allege that he used social media platforms to promote violence in Nigeria’s South-East region, including issuing sit-at-home orders and inciting attacks against civilians and government officials.
The Finnish government has emphasized the importance of international cooperation in the case but has refrained from revealing specifics about the nature or scope of this collaboration.
Ekpa has been a vocal advocate for the creation of an independent Biafran state, a position that has put him at odds with the Nigerian government.
His activities have drawn criticism for allegedly fueling unrest in the region, where his directives are believed to have disrupted daily life and escalated tensions.
The upcoming trial will shed more light on the evidence gathered against Ekpa and the charges he may face for his controversial actions.
