Gowon reveals what he did to stop Abacha from executing Obasanjo
Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has revealed that he appealed to the late General Sani Abacha to spare former President Olusegun Obasanjo from execution over an alleged coup plot in 1995.
Speaking at the inaugural Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carol and Praise Festival, organized by the Plateau State Government, Gowon recounted his intervention during a turbulent period in Nigeria’s history.
In 1995, Obasanjo was accused by Abacha’s regime of plotting a coup to overthrow the government.
Although he denied the allegations, Obasanjo was convicted and sentenced to death.
He remained imprisoned for three years before his release in 1998 following Abacha’s death on June 8.
As the event’s Special Guest of Honour, Gowon recalled sending a letter to Abacha, urging him to choose mercy.
“I reminded him that God had placed him in leadership to do good, not evil,” Gowon said. He further revealed that his wife delivered the letter personally to Abacha in Abuja late at night.
Gowon expressed gratitude that his plea contributed to a positive outcome. “Shortly after, things changed. Obasanjo was released from prison and eventually became our president in 1999.
This is a testament to the power of prayers and sincerity,” he stated, adding that he was delighted to celebrate the unity of Plateau State alongside Obasanjo.
Gowon also lauded the Plateau State Government for hosting the carol, emphasizing its significance in fostering peace and unity.
Acknowledging the state’s history of security challenges, he commended Governor Caleb Mutfwang for his efforts to promote harmony among residents through various initiatives.
