Police launch investigation into Kogi boat tragedy as death toll rises
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has ordered an immediate investigation into a tragic boat accident that occurred on November 29, 2024, along the Dambo-Ebuchi waterways in Kogi State.
The incident, which involved over 160 passengers, has left many families grieving, with 24 survivors rescued and scores still missing.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP extended his condolences to the government and people of Kogi State, particularly the families affected by the tragedy.
He described the incident as a significant loss and vowed to uncover the factors that led to the mishap.
The Force Marine Officer has been tasked with leading a comprehensive investigation aimed at identifying the cause of the accident and proposing measures to prevent future occurrences.
“The investigation will not only provide insights into the incident but also enhance safety protocols and emergency response systems on waterways across the country,” the statement read.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with the Nigeria Police Force coordinating efforts with other relevant agencies.
The IGP assured the public of the police’s commitment to locating the missing passengers and ensuring justice for the victims.
The police also called on waterway operators, boat owners, and stakeholders to collaborate with the Force Marine Department to implement stricter safety measures.
“Preventive measures are crucial to protecting passengers and operators on the nation’s waterways,” the IGP stated.
This tragic incident underscores ongoing concerns about water transport safety in Nigeria.
