Retiring Ogun CP regrets unresolved murder of finance director
The retiring Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, has said his only regret as he bows out of office was his inability to get the killers of the late finance director attached to the Governor’s Office, Mr Taiwo Oyekanmi.
Oyekanmi was ambushed and shot dead on November 29, 2023, while returning from the bank where he went to withdraw some funds for the state.
About five gunmen reportedly blocked the bullion van Oyekanmi boarded while ascending the popular Kuto Bridge in Abeokuta, opened fire on the official, broke the bullion van door with sledgehammers and carted away huge sums of money.
Oyekanmi was pronounced dead at the State Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta.
Governor Dapo Abiodun, moved by the incident, announced a bounty of N50m for anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the assailants.
Alamutu, who pulled out of service on Monday after 35 years of meritorious service, told newsmen that his only regret was the command’s inability to apprehend the assailants.
He said despite the efforts to track down the culprits, the lack of information and intelligence made it difficult for the police to have a breakthrough.
He nonetheless expressed confidence and prayed that his successor would continue from where he stopped in ensuring that justice was served.
“I deeply appreciate the unwavering support and commitment shown by my colleagues, community leaders, and citizens and the media throughout my administration.
“I want to also thank you for your support through your reports. The only regret I have in this state is that up till now, we have not been able to arrest the person who shot the finance director.
“That’s the only regret I have and it still boils down to what we are saying, no information, no clues. It took us to so many places, it took us even to Ibadan.
“That is the only regret I have, but God knows that my successor will continue from where we stopped because it is important we get the culprits and God will assist my successor,” he said.
