Nigerian Governors Under Fire for Maintaining Lavish Convoys Amid Economic Hardship
As Nigerians grapple with mounting economic challenges, including the removal of fuel subsidies and soaring inflation, state governors are facing criticism for their extravagant spending on luxury vehicle convoys.
Despite the widespread hardship, governors across the country continue to allocate millions of naira to maintain fleets of high-end vehicles such as the Lexus LX 570, Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, and BMW X5, which cost between N45 million and N70 million each, according to Punch. These vehicles incur substantial costs for maintenance, fuel, and security operations, raising questions about government priorities during a time of fiscal austerity.
Critics argue that such expenditures are tone-deaf and out of touch with the realities of ordinary Nigerians, many of whom struggle to afford basic necessities. In an era marked by subsidy removals and calls for reduced public spending, the extravagant convoys have sparked widespread public outrage.
While governors defend the expenses as necessary for security and protocol, citizens and advocacy groups insist that the funds could be redirected to pressing needs such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
Agatha Locombu, a resident of Lafia Local Government Area in Nasarawa State, voiced her dismay at the governor’s extensive convoy. “The vehicles being used by politicians are too many. Imagine a governor having a convoy of over 15 vehicles in these hard times—it’s simply not right,” she lamented.
“In Nasarawa State, our governor has numerous SUVs in his convoy. Sometimes I wonder how much the state spends to maintain them, while people can hardly afford three square meals a day,” Agatha added.
The public outcry highlights a growing demand for fiscal responsibility and greater alignment between government spending and the needs of struggling citizens.
