18-Year-Old Nigerian Student Sentenced to Three Years for Stealing Trousers
An 18-year-old student, Promise Ayiki, has been sentenced to three years in prison by a Magistrates’ Court in Jos for trespassing and theft.
Magistrate Shawomi Bokkos issued the verdict on Monday after Ayiki pleaded guilty to the charges. The court offered the convict an option to pay a fine of N200,000 to reduce the prison term to two years. Additionally, Ayiki was ordered to pay N500,000 in compensation to the victim or serve an extra year behind bars in default.
Prosecutor Ibrahim Gokwat told the court that the offence was reported on August 18 by the complainant, Victor Anzizi, at the Area Command Police Station. According to Gokwat, Ayiki broke into the complainant’s house and stole two phones, a tablet, trousers, and suits valued at N450,000.
The court ruled that Ayiki’s actions violated provisions of the Plateau Penal Code Law.
