Wike Serving Nigeria, Not APC” – Aide Defends FCT Minister Amid Anti-Party Allegations
Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media to Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has refuted claims that Wike is involved in anti-party activities.
Olayinka, responding to allegations from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Segun Sowunmi, dismissed the accusations that Wike is being used by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to destabilize the PDP.
“Wike is not working for APC; Wike is working for Nigeria. He is serving the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Olayinka said on Saturday.
He emphasized that Wike’s appointment as FCT Minister by President Bola Tinubu is a recognition of his competence and dedication to national development, not a betrayal of his PDP membership. According to Olayinka, Wike had informed the PDP of his decision to accept the ministerial role, and there were no objections.
Olayinka also highlighted the differences between presidential and parliamentary systems, explaining that appointments in a presidential system are not restricted to ruling party members. He cited examples of opposition figures like Daniel Bwala, who have been appointed to critical roles in Tinubu’s administration despite their prior criticisms of the President.
“When it is time to play politics, we play politics. That chapter ended with last year’s elections. Now is the time for governance,” Olayinka stated.
He added that President Tinubu recognized Wike’s capabilities and entrusted him with the FCT portfolio to deliver results for Nigerians.
The aide urged critics to focus on national progress, emphasizing that Wike’s commitment to his ministerial duties goes beyond partisan lines.
“Wike’s critics fail to see that governance is about serving the people, not political affiliations,” Olayinka concluded.
