Fire Claims Lives of Husband, Wife, and Grandson in Ibadan
A tragic fire incident in the Ori-Eru, Idikan area of Ibadan, Oyo State, has resulted in the deaths of a husband, his wife, and their grandson. The fire, which affected a residential storey building, occurred in the early hours of Friday.
The General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Yemi Akinyinka, confirmed the incident in a statement released in Ibadan.
According to Akinyinka, the agency received a distress call about the fire at 3:46 am on Friday from a resident identified as Hassan. Firefighters were immediately dispatched to the scene.
“On arrival, we found the upper floor of a six-room residential storey building engulfed in flames. We swiftly swung into action, and the fire was completely extinguished,” Akinyinka said.
He further disclosed that while three people—a husband, wife, and their grandson—died in the incident, five others were rescued from the building. The ground floor and nearby properties were spared from the fire.
Explaining the cause of the fire, Akinyinka said, “From our investigation, we discovered that in an attempt to keep their house warm due to the cold weather, they used a naked flame, which caused the disaster after they fell asleep.”
The scene was also attended by a team of policemen led by CSP Olaniyan Jibola from the Mapo Division and operatives of Amotekun led by Gbenga Akinyemi from the North West Division, who worked to maintain law and order.
