Lagos Police Refute Claims Woman Who Assaulted FRSC Official Is a Police Officer
The Lagos State Police Command has denied reports that Monalisa Osayi, arrested for assaulting a Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) official on December 7, 2024, is a police officer.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the command’s spokesperson, clarified this in a statement on Thursday, stating that Osayi was arrested and prosecuted by the Ajah Division of the Lagos State Police Command.
“Had she been a police officer, internal disciplinary actions such as suspension or dismissal would have been initiated before she could be arraigned in court,” Hundeyin explained.
The police urged the public to disregard the claims and reaffirmed the strong collaboration between the police and FRSC in maintaining law and order in Lagos State.
Osayi is currently being held at Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison for allegedly assaulting FRSC official Habeeb Sayidi during a routine patrol.
A video of the incident, which went viral, showed Osayi kicking the FRSC official and preventing him from deflating the tyres of her impounded vehicle.
She was arrested on December 15, 2024, by the Unit Commander of the RS2.19 Lekki Unit Command. Although she was initially released on bail by the Ajah Police Division, her detention was reinstated following efforts by the Unit Commander.
Osayi was arraigned on December 16, 2024, before Court 3 of the Eti-Osa Magistrates’ Court. She pleaded not guilty to charges of assault and breach of public peace.
The court granted her bail with conditions, including a ₦100,000 payment and two family-member sureties with valid tax clearances. However, her inability to meet these conditions led to her remand in custody.
The case has been adjourned to January 8, 2025, for further hearing.
