Judge Postpones Bail Ruling for #EndSARS Activist Accused of Threatening Tinubu’s Son

The Federal High Court in Abuja has deferred its ruling on a bail application for Olamide Thomas, an #EndSARS activist accused of making threats against President Bola Tinubu’s son, Seyi Tinubu, on social media.

The hearing, which was scheduled for Monday, was delayed after the prosecution, represented by Victor Okoye, informed Justice Emeka Nwite that he had only just received the bail application and needed more time to respond.

Defence counsel Seprebofa Oyeghe argued against the adjournment, noting that the bail application had been filed and served on the prosecution immediately after Ms. Thomas’ arraignment on December 20. He expressed surprise at the prosecution’s claim of being unaware of the filing.

Justice Nwite confirmed from court records that the application had indeed been served on December 20. “From the endorsement here, it shows it was given on the 20th day of December, and today is the 30th of December,” the judge said.

In response, Mr. Okoye admitted, “My lord, I didn’t see it. I am just seeing it this morning,” and requested an adjournment to file a counter-affidavit.

Reluctantly, Mr. Oyeghe agreed to the adjournment.

Meanwhile, Ms. Thomas, who was initially absent from the proceedings, arrived later in the day and took her place in the dock.

Justice Nwite adjourned the case to Tuesday for the hearing of the bail application and the commencement of trial.

The case highlights increasing concerns over attacks on Nigerian citizens for their social media activities. President Tinubu’s administration, which came into power with promises to uphold fundamental freedoms, has faced criticism for actions reminiscent of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure, marked by frequent crackdowns on human rights.
