Swiss airline crew member dies after emergency landing
A Swiss International Air Lines crew member hospitalized following an emergency landing has passed away, the airline announced on Monday.
The incident occurred on December 23 when an Airbus A220-300 carrying 74 passengers and five crew members was en route from Bucharest to Zurich.
Engine issues forced the plane to make an emergency landing in Graz, Austria, after smoke filled the cockpit and cabin.
“With profound sorrow, we must confirm that our young colleague succumbed to his injuries in the hospital in Graz on Monday,” the airline said in a statement.
Swiss International Air Lines CEO Jens Fehlinger expressed shock and grief over the loss.
“We are devastated by the passing of our dear colleague,” Fehlinger said. “Our thoughts are with his family during this unimaginable pain. On behalf of all of us at Swiss, I extend my heartfelt condolences. We will do everything possible to support them during this incredibly difficult time.”
The airline community remains in mourning as investigations into the incident continue.
