Panic as Armed Robbers Strike in Akure, Stealing Three Vehicles
Panic and confusion have gripped residents of the Oke Ogba community in Akure, the Ondo State capital, following a daring robbery spree that resulted in the theft of three vehicles within 24 hours.
The incidents, which occurred on Wednesday and Thursday nights, left residents in shock. According to reports, vehicle owners had parked their cars in their usual spots only to discover them missing the following mornings. Among the stolen vehicles were two Toyota Camry models, including a “pencil” model, while the details of the third vehicle remain unclear at the time of reporting.
Security Guards Implicated
Sources revealed that the community’s two security guards may be prime suspects. The guards had reportedly demanded an increase in their monthly salaries from the chairman of the landlord association and abandoned their posts when their demands were not immediately met.
A resident, who spoke under anonymity, said, “The security guards suddenly informed the landlord association that they were no longer working. The chairman insisted they provide at least a month’s notice for the community to find replacements. However, they failed to report for duty on Thursday night, leaving the community gate open. The next morning, we discovered two vehicles were stolen, following an earlier theft on Wednesday night. This situation is shocking and devastating.”
Ongoing Security Concerns
The case has been reported to the Fanibi Police Station, and the suspects have been handed over to law enforcement. However, residents are growing increasingly frustrated by recurring thefts in the area.
One resident lamented, “This community has become notorious for robberies and burglaries. Despite the landlords’ efforts to improve security, the results have been disappointing. Just last month, a transformer cable was stolen, and no arrests were made.”
Between May last year and January this year, there have reportedly been over nine cases of robberies and burglaries in the Oke Ogba community. Residents are now calling on the Ondo State Police Command to intensify efforts to address the insecurity, which has left many families in distress.
“We beg the police to intervene. These robberies have caused immense suffering, and it is disheartening that little progress has been made,” another resident pleaded.
As investigations continue, the community remains on edge, hoping for swift action to restore peace and security.
