Communal Clash in Ondo: Police Commissioner Calls For Peace

The Ondo State Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Afolabi, has appealed for calm following violent clashes between youths from Oka Odo, Ebo, and Owake communities in Iwaro. The conflict, which began on January 12, 2025, has resulted in the deaths of two people, with others sustaining injuries and currently receiving medical attention.

According to reports, the clash started when youths from Oka Odo, during a hunting expedition, were allegedly attacked by Ebo youths, who reportedly mistook them for individuals from Owake due to an unresolved land dispute. The misunderstanding escalated, leading to a retaliatory attack by Oka Odo youths on the Ebo community, which involved incidents of arson and property destruction.

In a press statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Funmilayo Odunlami, the Commissioner emphasized the need for peaceful resolution, warning that violence would only hinder progress and development in the affected communities.

A police team, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), has been deployed to the area to restore peace and prevent further escalation. The CP assured residents that those responsible for the violence will be brought to justice.

The Commissioner urged the communities to embrace dialogue and peaceful coexistence to prevent further loss of lives and property.
