APC fumes over minority leader’s seat declared vacant

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly condemned the decision of the Zamfara House of Assembly to declare the seat of the former minority leader, Aliyu Ango-Kagara, vacant.

Ango-Kagara, who represented Talata Mafara South state constituency, had his position revoked by the assembly on Tuesday.

In a statement issued by the party’s spokesman in Zamfara, Yusuf Idris, the APC labeled the move as an abuse of power and an attempt to silence the opposition in the assembly.

“We see this as an effort to purge the APC from the state assembly. The decision to declare the minority leader’s seat vacant was politically motivated,” the statement claimed.

The APC also expressed strong disapproval of the ongoing situation in the assembly, warning that the party might seek legal action for clarification and potential damages.

“We condemn the assembly’s actions in the strongest terms. This, combined with the illegal suspension of eight members since January 2024, is unacceptable,” the party stated.

The party further accused the assembly of suspending opposition members without following constitutional procedures or the house’s rules, describing it as a violation of the principles of fairness.

“The leadership of the house seems to be targeting members who refuse to conform to their directives, especially those who oppose their actions,” the APC added.

The statement concluded by reiterating that, even in cases of violations, any member must be granted a fair hearing before any action is taken, criticizing the assembly’s “blinded” actions that bypass due process.
