Ohanaeze Ndigbo urges Gov Fubara to end dispute, cooperate with Rivers Assembly

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has called on Rivers State Governor, Siminialayi Fubara, to put an end to his political dispute with the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, and 26 other lawmakers.

This follows the recent Supreme Court ruling dismissing Governor Fubara’s case against the Assembly under case number SC/CV/1071/2024, which Ohanaeze described as a victory for democracy and the rule of law.

In a statement signed by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Deputy President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the group emphasized that the court’s decision reaffirms Amaewhule’s legitimacy as Speaker and urged Governor Fubara to respect the judgment.

Call for Unity and Respect for Rule of Law

Ohanaeze Ndigbo expressed disappointment that Governor Fubara disregarded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s earlier peace efforts aimed at resolving the crisis in Rivers State.

“The governor’s refusal to heed the President’s advice and his continued legal battles demonstrate a failure to prioritize the greater good over personal ambition,” the statement read.

The group stressed that Governor Fubara’s repeated legal actions have, ironically, validated the legitimacy of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and warned that continued defiance could destabilize governance in the state.

“By perpetuating these legal contests, Governor Fubara has inadvertently affirmed the authority of the Assembly. His continuous defiance of constitutional principles and attempts to create disorder through individuals like Oko Jumbo only deepen the political crisis.”

Warning Against Political Isolation

Ohanaeze further cautioned the governor that refusing to cooperate with the Assembly could lead to political isolation and tarnish his leadership legacy.

“The Supreme Court’s verdict serves as a clear message—it calls for reflection, reconciliation, and a return to the principles of accountability and collaboration. Governor Fubara must recognize that the sooner he aligns with the will of the people through their elected representatives, the better it will be for his administration and legacy,” the group warned.

Appeal for Peace and Stability

In conclusion, Ohanaeze Ndigbo urged Governor Fubara to abandon hostility and embrace dialogue with the Assembly for the sake of peace and effective governance in Rivers State.

“We implore Governor Siminialayi Fubara to set aside political conflicts and work in harmony with Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule. Only through unity, mutual respect, and constructive engagement can Rivers State achieve stability and progress,” the statement concluded.
