Empowering Diaspora Participation in Governance and Politics:

In today’s interconnected world, living abroad does not mean being excluded from the governance and political processes of one’s home country. On the contrary, the growing trend of diaspora engagement demonstrates that geographical distance is no longer a barrier to political ambition or active participation in shaping our nation’s future.

Modern communication technologies and the globalization of ideas have enabled diaspora communities to stay informed and involved in their homeland’s affairs. Across the globe, individuals residing in foreign lands are playing increasingly critical roles in their home countries, whether by voting, supporting candidates, advocating for policy reforms, or even running for office themselves. Their involvement is not just a testament to the enduring bond with their roots, but also a powerful reminder that governance is a shared responsibility.

Diaspora members bring a unique set of experiences and perspectives acquired through exposure to diverse cultures, innovative practices, and advanced technologies. This global insight is invaluable for addressing local challenges. In many instances, diasporans have been at the forefront of driving transformative changes by introducing best practices, influencing policy debates, and contributing to economic and social development through both financial investments and intellectual capital.

Take, for instance, the increasing number of diaspora-led initiatives that have influenced electoral processes and governance reforms. These efforts have not only amplified the voice of the diaspora but have also catalyzed a broader, more inclusive conversation on national development. By participating in the political arena, diaspora members help ensure that the governance structures in our homeland are reflective of a diversity of experiences and aspirations.

In our own context, the contribution of diasporans to Nigeria’s democratic journey has been substantial. Through voting in national and local elections, participating in public debates, and forming advocacy groups, Nigerians abroad have demonstrated that they are key stakeholders in the country’s development. Their active involvement sends a strong message that patriotism transcends borders, and that every citizen, regardless of where they reside, has a role to play in shaping our nation’s destiny.

As the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Diaspora for Ondo State, I urge our fellow citizens living abroad to take up this mantle of responsibility. Your voice matters, and your participation can drive the changes we need. By engaging in the political process, be it through casting your vote, contributing to policy discussions, or even pursuing elected office, you bring valuable insights that can bridge the gap between international standards and local governance.

Moreover, your involvement strengthens the accountability of our political institutions. When diasporans actively participate in elections and civic activities, they hold local leaders to higher standards and encourage transparency and good governance. This, in turn, leads to more robust institutions and policies that are better suited to address the needs and aspirations of our people.

Now is the time to harness the collective power of our global community. Let us transform the narrative that physical distance equates to political disengagement. Whether you are a seasoned political activist or a concerned citizen eager to contribute, your engagement is essential. Together, we can create a governance landscape that is inclusive, progressive, and truly reflective of the aspirations of all Nigerians, both at home and abroad. In conclusion, I call on every member of the diaspora to rise to the occasion. Engage in our political process, share your expertise, and be an active participant in the development of Ondo State and Nigeria. Your contribution is not only a duty but a legacy for future generations, a legacy of unity, progress, and unwavering commitment to the betterment of our homeland.

Oluyemi Fasipe (Yemie Fash),

SSA on Diaspora to Ondo State Governor.
