A Magistrates’ Court in Gwagwalada, Abuja, has sentenced a motorcyclist, Lawal Rabiu, 30, to six months imprisonment for extortion and causing grievous hurt.
Mr Rabiu, who was brought before the court on charges of criminal conspiracy, extortion, causing grievous hurt, and an attempt to commit an offence of theft, had pleaded guilty.
He consequently begged the court for mercy.
The magistrate, Olatunji Oladunmoye, sentenced the convict without an option of a fine and warned him to desist from committing crime and be of good behaviour.
Earlier, the prosecuting counsel, Dabo Yakubu, told the court that the complainant, Haruna Hassan of Dandu Kwali, Abuja, reported the matter at Gwagwalada Police Station on February 6.
Mr Yakubu said that the complainant reported that the convict and one Ismaila (surname yet unknown), now at large, on February 1 criminally conspired and snatched the complainant’s Boxer Bajaj motorcycle, valued at N1.1 million.
He said that they also collected his Infinix Hot 11 mobile phone, valued at N95,000, and a cash sum of N39,000.
The prosecutor said that in the process they inflicted injuries on their victim’s head and shoulder.
He said that during the police investigation, the items were recovered in the convict’s possession.
Mr Yakubu said that the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 97, 291, 241, and 95 of the Penal Code.
