Why Tinubu, Atiku, Obi Shouldn’t Contest 2027 Election – Ex-Labour Party Chieftain Okonkwo

Former Labour Party (LP) chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Mr. Peter Obi, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to step aside from the 2027 presidential election.

Okonkwo, who served as the spokesman for the LP presidential campaign team in the 2023 general election, cited the trio’s inability to deliver on their promises and unite the opposition as reasons for his stance.

Speaking on Channels Television’s evening programme, “Politics Today” on Tuesday, Okonkwo said he maintains his stance that the trio shouldn’t contest in 2027. He emphasized that Nigerian politics requires decisive action to secure mandates.

“You must do everything decisively to secure it. Unfortunately, nature has bestowed on us the duty that in Nigeria, you will not only win an election but you have to fight for your mandate,” he said.

Okonkwo also criticized the opposition for their failure to collaborate and form alliances. He said the lawmakers missed an opportunity to produce the speaker and vice speaker in the House of Representatives, despite having more opposition members than the ruling class.

Okonkwo had announced his resignation from the Labour Party on the same day, citing internal rambles.

He ruled out returning to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
