The Ohanaeze Ndigbo has declared a two-day mourning period to honor the late leader of Afenifere, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, who passed away on Friday, February 14, 2025, at the age of 96.

In a statement issued by its Deputy President General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the group announced that the mourning period would span two traditional Igbo market days, in line with cultural practices, as a mark of respect for Adebanjo’s contributions to Nigeria’s unity and development.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo deeply mourns the passing of Pa Ayodele Samuel Adebanjo, a true statesman who dedicated his life to fostering interethnic harmony and promoting justice.

His unwavering support for the Igbo people and his commitment to national unity will never be forgotten,” the statement read.

Isiguzoro emphasized that Adebanjo was a staunch advocate for fairness, recalling his role in strengthening ties between Nigeria’s ethnic groups.

“As a key figure in the Middle Belt–Southern Nigerian Forum, he championed collaboration among diverse groups and stood firmly against injustice,” he added.

The statement also highlighted Adebanjo’s role in the 2023 presidential election, where he openly supported Labour Party candidate Peter Obi.

“His endorsement of Obi was a bold demonstration of his patriotism and belief in a better Nigeria, free from ethnic bias,” Isiguzoro noted.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo pledged full participation in Adebanjo’s funeral rites, expressing solidarity with the Yoruba community and offering condolences to the Adebanjo family, Afenifere, the Oduduwa Nation, and Southwest governors.

“On behalf of Igbos worldwide, we extend our deepest sympathies. May the Almighty grant him eternal rest as he joins the ancestors who paved the way for a just and united Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
