UCH resident doctors declare indefinite strike over power outage

Resident doctors at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan have commenced an indefinite strike due to ongoing power supply issues in some of their residential quarters.

The decision was confirmed on Monday by the General Secretary of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at UCH, Dr. Uthman Adedeji.

The strike follows months of electricity challenges within the hospital’s residential areas.

Although the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) recently restored power to UCH after over 100 days of blackout, the reconnection did not extend to all affected quarters.

According to Adedeji, the association had earlier issued a warning that doctors would withdraw their services if power was not fully restored by 4 p.m. on Monday.

While acknowledging that some areas have been reconnected, he noted that others remain in darkness, leaving the association with no choice but to proceed with the strike as planned.

Following an emergency general meeting, the association resolved that the strike would continue indefinitely until power is fully restored to all residential quarters.

Adedeji commended the hospital management for its efforts so far but stressed the need for a complete resolution to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services.

He assured that the association would continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as efforts to resolve the issue progress.
