The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions has advised a six-month suspension for Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central. This follows her accusations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

During Thursday’s plenary session, the committee recommended that her salary and security details be withdrawn. Senator Neda Imasuen, the committee’s chairman, stated that Akpoti-Uduaghan was found guilty of all allegations against her, citing her failure to appear before the committee for a review of her conduct.

Additionally, she is expected to issue a formal apology to the Senate for what has been described as disrespectful behavior.

The controversy began earlier this year when Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of sexual harassment and abuse of office, claiming that her legislative motions, including those concerning the Ajaokuta Steel Company, were deliberately obstructed. She also alleged that Akpabio called her a “nightclub girl” during a Senate session, a remark he later apologized for. These grievances were formalized in a petition she resubmitted to the Senate.

Akpabio has denied all allegations, stating his respect for women and dismissing the claims as baseless. He also criticized the committee’s recommendation, expressing disappointment over what he called unfounded accusations.

The Senate is set to debate the committee’s report, with possible amendments before a final decision. Akpoti-Uduaghan’s absence during the committee’s probe has raised concerns, as she failed to appear despite prior notifications.

As the situation unfolds, attention remains on the Senate’s deliberations, which will determine whether the suspension is upheld.
