Rainstorm: Gov Aiyedatiwa visits Akure airport, promises govt intervention

Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has assured that the Akure Airport would receive necessary government support to restore normalcy.

The Governor gave this assurance during a visit to the Akure Airport, following a rainstorm which damaged some equipment.

He described the rainstorm as a devastating one, adding that so much damage has been caused.

“It was reported that about 65 knots was the strength of that wind, which is a very strong wind that has caused so much damage to the infrastructure here”.

The Governor commended the Minister of Aviation, Mr. Festus Keyamo for quick response by deploying his men to attend to the damages, so that the airport can be brought back to operation as soon as possible.

According to the Governor, a lot of work has started at the terminal building, at the control tower and has been assured that later by Sunday, the flight operation will resume.

While appreciating the aviation leaders for what they have been able to put in place stressing that the State Government will also give necessary support to ensure that the operation starts.

The Governor announced the donation of a fire truck to the airport while also promising additional support to bring the aiport back to full operations.

Airport manager, Mrs Oluyemisi Adebiyi appreciated Governor Aiyedatiwa for the timely visit and promise for support. She noted that things are under control and Airport would begin operations soon.

Also speaking, Manager, National Airspace Management Agency, Engr Samuel Famuyiwa noted that the damages is not as severe as earlier reported.

“The situation is under control, and it is not as severe as it was reported yesterday. Engineers and technical teams have been working round the clock to restore operations, and we are optimistic that flight activities will resume by Sunday.”

The Governor was accompanied by His Deputy, Dr. Olayide Adelami, Members representing Akure North Constituency, Ondo State House of Assembly, Hon. Kolawole Ologede, Akure North Local Government chairman, Hon. Johnson Ogunbolude, Special Adviser, Infrastructure, Lands and Housing, Engr. Abiola Olawoye.
