Former Kaduna senator, Shehu Sani, has revealed that he narrowly escaped a six-month suspension from the Senate in 2018 after disclosing details of lawmakers’ salaries and allowances.
In a post on X on Thursday, Sani stated that the intervention of then-Senate President Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, prevented what could have been a severe penalty for making the information public.
During his time in the Senate, Sani had disclosed in March 2018 that each senator received N13.5 million monthly as running costs, in addition to N200 million set aside for constituency projects.
His revelation sparked criticism from fellow lawmakers, as such financial details are typically kept from the public.
His remarks come amid the Senate’s recent decision to suspend Kogi Central senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, for six months.
Her suspension followed a report by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions after her February 20 clash with Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
On February 28, Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged in an interview with Arise TV that her troubles in the Senate began after she rejected what she described as inappropriate advances from Akpabio.
