Rivers govt criticizes Fubara’s removal, questions Wike’s retention

The Rivers State Government has expressed strong disapproval of President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove Governor Siminalayi Fubara while allowing the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to remain in office, despite allegations of instigating the state’s political crisis.

In a statement released by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Warisenibo Joe Johnson, the government described the action as unfair, emphasizing that Fubara has consistently upheld constitutional order, promoted peace, and remained committed to good governance amid political unrest.

Johnson noted that since taking office, the governor has focused on maintaining security, safeguarding lives and property, and ensuring the state’s development.

Despite ongoing tensions, Fubara has continued to fulfill his constitutional duties, prioritizing the interests of Rivers residents above personal or political disputes.

The commissioner also pointed out that after President Tinubu intervened in the political conflict, the Rivers State Government adhered to all agreed resolutions in good faith, including reinstating commissioners who had earlier resigned.

Additionally, the government promptly implemented the Supreme Court ruling as soon as the certified true copy was received, demonstrating its commitment to legal and democratic principles.

Despite these efforts, Johnson expressed disappointment that lawmakers aligned with Wike, the former governor of the state, have persisted in obstructing peace and stability.

He questioned why Fubara was removed while Wike, whom he described as a major player in the crisis, remained unaffected.

“It is baffling that the governor was removed while the minister, who has been a key figure in the crisis, remains in office,” Johnson stated.

He reassured Rivers residents that, despite the political uncertainty, governance in the state remains uninterrupted. Workers’ salaries are being paid, infrastructure projects are ongoing, and security remains stable.

The government urged the people to stay calm and law-abiding, reaffirming its dedication to preserving democracy and ensuring continued development in the state.

“As a resilient people, we will navigate this challenge with patience, wisdom, and an unshaken belief in democracy,” Johnson added.

The Rivers State Government reiterated its commitment to prioritizing the welfare of its citizens as it continues to address the evolving political situation.
