FRSC arrests 7,798 for fake number plates in two months
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has arrested 7,798 individuals within two months over offences related to fake vehicle number plates.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, disclosed the figures during a meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on FRSC in Abuja on Wednesday.
The meeting was held in response to growing concerns about the widespread use of fake vehicle number plates, which pose serious risks to public safety and national security.
In a statement issued by the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the corps marshal appealed to the National Assembly for continued support in tackling the issue.
He emphasized the need to strengthen enforcement measures and enhance the National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS) Portal to prevent vehicles with fake registration from operating on Nigerian roads.
Mr. Mohammed said the surge in number plate-related offences highlights a disturbing trend, with many motorists using fake or unauthorized registration plates.
He warned that this practice threatens national security by obstructing efforts to trace vehicles involved in criminal activities.
Despite resistance from vehicle owners during enforcement operations, the FRSC remains committed to the ongoing clampdown.
The corps marshal praised the National Assembly’s role in supporting road safety initiatives and called for stronger laws to ensure offenders face justice.
He also urged citizens to cooperate by obtaining genuine number plates and reporting fake ones to the nearest FRSC command.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the House Committee on FRSC, Hon. Abiodun Adesida, pledged continued legislative backing for the corps and described the crackdown as a crucial move toward ensuring road safety and national security.
