IG orders deployment of security personnel to Rivers

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed the immediate deployment of additional personnel and resources to Rivers State to strengthen security and protect lives, property, and vital infrastructure.

Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, noting that the deployment will be carried out in collaboration with the Armed Forces and other security agencies to prevent any breakdown of law and order in the region.

Egbetokun emphasized that while citizens have the right to seek legal redress, any unlawful protests, gatherings, or actions that threaten public peace will be dealt with firmly.

“The Nigeria Police Force reiterates that individuals can seek redress through legal channels.

However, any attempt to disrupt public order through illegal means will attract full legal consequences,” the statement said.

Residents have been urged to remain law-abiding and go about their daily activities without fear, as security agencies remain committed to maintaining peace and stability.

The police also advised the public to report suspicious activities, warning that anyone planning to cause unrest in the state will face decisive action.

This development follows President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State on Tuesday.

The President also suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and members of the State House of Assembly for six months. Vice Admiral Ibok-ete Ibas (retd) was appointed as Sole Administrator for the state.
