BREAKING: 12 inmates escape from Kogi prison

Twelve inmates have escaped from the Federal Correctional Center in Kotonkarfe, Kogi State, in an early morning jailbreak on Monday.

The Kogi State Government confirmed the incident in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Femi Fanwo.

He commended the swift response of security agencies and described the escape as unfortunate.

Fanwo emphasized that the state government is working closely with security operatives to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

He noted that the theory suggesting the inmates escaped through the tower without any structural damage raises serious concerns and warrants a thorough probe.

“This calls for a full investigation to uncover the facts, apprehend the escapees, and identify any internal collaborators,” Fanwo said.

Governor Ahmed Ododo has directed the State Security Adviser to partner with the correctional center and other security agencies to prevent further breaches.

The government also reiterated its commitment to supporting federal security agencies with logistics and resources to strengthen security operations.

Assuring residents that the situation is under control, Fanwo urged the public to remain calm and continue with their normal activities, adding that the safety of lives and property remains the government’s top priority.
