Thunderstorm fire destroys Ekiti school, pupils relocated
A thunderstorm-induced fire on Sunday destroyed five classroom blocks at Saint Peter’s Primary School in Igbemo Ekiti, prompting the relocation of pupils to AUD Pilot Nursery and Primary School nearby to continue their education.
The fire broke out during a heavy downpour that lasted over an hour. Although the school building was severely damaged, no lives were lost as the incident occurred outside school hours.
Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, represented by Deputy Governor Monisade Afuye, visited the scene on Monday.
He assured the affected community that the government would rebuild the structure promptly.
“I am saddened by the fire caused by a mysterious thunder strike. Thankfully, no lives were lost.
The quick relocation of pupils shows the commitment of the State Universal Basic Education Board to their academic progress,” the governor said.
He added that the damaged school building would be restored soon so that teaching and learning could resume in the original location.
During the visit, the governor also ordered an end to open defecation and waste dumping at the temporary school premises after teachers raised health concerns.
Mrs. Adesola George-Ojo, Education Secretary for Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government, emphasized the need to complete perimeter fencing at the school to prevent further environmental risks.
