The Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to deploy 3,000 smart cameras across the state to enhance traffic management and road safety.
Akin-George Fashola, Director of the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), shared this update during a radio program in Lagos on Tuesday.
He explained that these cameras would be used to monitor speed limits and enforce traffic regulations as part of an electronic policing (e-policing) initiative.
This effort falls under the state’s Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), designed to improve traffic monitoring and enforcement.
“This year, we are prioritizing speed limit enforcement across Lagos. While this is not a new regulation, stricter implementation is necessary to reduce accidents,” Fashola stated.
To support Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision for improved traffic control, smart cameras have already been positioned in strategic locations, including Alapere, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, and Allen Junction.
According to Fashola, the speed limit at Alapere is set at 80 km/h towards Alausa and 60 km/h heading towards Oworonshoki due to pedestrian movement and nearby fuel stations. On Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, the speed limit remains 60 km/h due to high foot traffic and frequent road crossings.
At Allen Junction, rather than monitoring speed, the cameras are designed to detect traffic offenses such as running red lights and stopping beyond designated areas.
With the new e-policing system, drivers exceeding speed limits will face penalties, including a ₦50,000 fine for violations.
Offenders will receive SMS notifications from VIS detailing the nature of the offense and the corresponding fine.
Fashola assured that motorists could challenge fines if they had valid proof, but the government would also provide technology-based evidence to support enforcement.
He also highlighted improvements in VIS services, including the introduction of online roadworthiness certification, emphasizing the state’s commitment to using technology for efficient traffic management.
