Court remands luxury bus driver over death of five UNIOSUN students
An Osun State Magistrate Court in Osogbo has ordered the remand of a luxury bus driver, Ibrahim Muntari, 35, for allegedly causing the death of six people, including five students of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), through reckless driving.
Presiding over the case, Chief Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara ruled that Muntari be kept in custody pending further proceedings.
The accused, who was reportedly driving without a license, roadworthiness documents, or vehicle insurance, pleaded not guilty to an eight-count charge, which included reckless driving and traffic violations.
According to police prosecutor ASP Akintunde Jacob, Muntari operated the Lagos-registered luxury bus (EPE 796 VH) belonging to Silver Luxury Travels and Freight in a manner that endangered public safety, leading to six fatalities and injuries to four others.
Defense counsel Shaibu Gomina applied for bail, but the court denied the request.
The case has been adjourned to June 2, 2025.
The accident, which occurred on March 23, 2025, in Ikire, Osun State, involved Muntari’s bus and a commercial vehicle (OYO GHD 499 XA).
Among the deceased were UNIOSUN students Olagbemide Olaoluwadotun, Funmilola Mary Olawuyi, Ogundare Oluwapelumi Rhoda, Ogundare Ayomide, and Farooq Suleiman. The identities of other victims are yet to be confirmed.
