Ondo NUJ condemns sale of caskets at govt hospital
The Ondo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has urged the state government to immediately relocate a casket shop operating within the premises of the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH), Akure Annex.
Expressing concern over its impact on patients and visitors, the union highlighted that the coffin shop is situated directly opposite the Outpatient Department (OPD) and near the Emergency Unit, which could have psychological effects on those receiving medical care.
This resolution was reached during the union’s final congress under its current leadership, held on March 27, 2025, at the Press Centre, Alagbaka, Akure. The session, presided over by the council chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite, had members from various chapels in attendance.
In his remarks, Adegbite appreciated the support of members throughout his tenure and credited the state executive team for fostering unity within the council.
Beyond the issue of casket sales, the congress discussed other critical matters, including security, healthcare, and media engagement.
The union commended Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa for his prompt response to security concerns, particularly the establishment of a Joint Task Force.
However, it called on the government to equip security agencies with essential resources such as vehicles, drones, and trackers to enhance their operations. Additionally, it recommended recruiting more personnel and providing the Amotekun Corps with additional vehicles.
On healthcare, the union urged the state government to declare a state of emergency to improve access to quality and affordable medical services.
The congress also called for the revival of the quarterly “Meet the Governor” media chat to ensure transparency and public engagement on government policies and programs.
Regarding education, the NUJ welcomed the recruitment of teachers for primary and secondary schools but emphasized the need for fair distribution, particularly in rural areas where teachers are scarce.
The congress communique was prepared by Jacob Akintunde (Correspondents’ Chapel), Olayinka Ogunleye (Digital Media Chapel), and Babatunde Ayedoju (Owena Press Chapel) and was electronically signed by the State Secretary, Olaoluwa Meshack.
