Deaf pedestrian killed by reckless commercial bus in Lagos
A deaf pedestrian lost his life over the weekend after being struck by a mini commercial bus, commonly called Korope, on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Ikeja, Lagos.
Witnesses reported that the driver, who was allegedly driving recklessly, lost control of the vehicle and veered off his lane.
In an attempt to regain control, he collided with another stationary mini bus before hitting the unsuspecting pedestrian.
Confirming the incident, Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), stated that the crash involved two Suzuki mini buses with registration numbers EPE 279 YJ and BDG 558 YG.
“LASTMA operatives arrived swiftly, securing the scene and alerting the Area ‘F’ Police Division, which took custody of the vehicles for further investigation.
The State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) also responded promptly, evacuating the victim’s remains to the General Hospital, Ikeja,” Taofiq said.
Reacting to the tragedy, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, expressed condolences to the victim’s family.
He urged commercial drivers to follow traffic regulations and highlighted the role of the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) in monitoring speed violations at locations such as Alapere, Ogudu Road, and Nitel, on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility. Reckless speeding and disregard for traffic laws pose a serious danger to public safety.
I urge all motorists to obey traffic rules to prevent unnecessary loss of lives,” Giwa stated.
Authorities have assured the public that investigations are ongoing to determine further details of the incident.
