Okpebholo visits senate deputy president over Edo travellers’ killings

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has paid a condolence visit to the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, following the brutal killing of travellers in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State.

The governor met with Jibrin at his residence in Maitama, Abuja, on Monday.

The visit comes after a mob intercepted a group of hunters traveling from Kano State for Sallah celebrations, ransacked their vehicle, and killed them last Thursday.

A statement by Ismail Mudashir, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Deputy Senate President, confirmed the meeting.

Okpebholo expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident and assured Jibrin that the Edo State government would support the victims’ families.

He also revealed that 14 suspects had been arrested and would be transferred to Abuja for further interrogation.

He condemned the killings as unfortunate and unacceptable, vowing that the perpetrators would face justice.

“The president is deeply concerned and taking decisive action.

The Inspector General of Police is involved, and the Deputy Inspector General of the Criminal Investigation Department is leading the investigation.

We are committed to ensuring justice and have also set up a committee to assist the victims’ families,” Okpebholo said.

In response, Senator Jibrin stressed the need for swift justice, emphasizing that such acts must not be repeated.

“This is a barbaric act, and those responsible must be punished to prevent future occurrences.

Nigerians across different regions have coexisted peacefully for centuries, and we must ensure this never happens again under your leadership,” Jibrin stated.

He commended Okpebholo for his swift response and urged him to continue working with authorities, including the Kano State governor, to address the situation.
