NSCDC officer dies, six security personnel injured in Abia road

A Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) officer has died, while five policemen and a soldier sustained injuries in an accident along the Umuahia-Bende-Ohafia federal highway in Abia State.

The crash occurred at Ibeku when a vehicle carrying members of the state’s joint security task force—comprising Police, Army, and NSCDC personnel—lost control and veered into a ditch.

The highway, known for its poor condition and narrow structure, may have contributed to the accident.

Local residents and motorists at Ihie Ibeku quickly responded, helping to rescue the victims and transporting them to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, before security agencies arrived.

Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle had 10 security operatives on board. One NSCDC officer was confirmed dead, while eight others were injured.

An officer who had disembarked before the crash was initially declared missing but was later found unharmed.

Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, declined to comment on the incident, stating she does not speak for the joint security task force, known as ‘Operation Crush.’

Governor Alex Otti expressed condolences to the task force and the family of the deceased NSCDC officer.

In a statement by his media adviser, Ferdinand Ekeoma, the governor assured that the injured personnel would receive quality medical care.

He praised the task force’s efforts in securing the state and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting their operations.
