INEC rejects recall petition against Akpoti-Uduaghan

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed the recall petition against suspended Kogi Central senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, citing failure to meet constitutional requirements.

“The petition for the recall of the senator representing the Kogi Central Senatorial District has not met the requirement of Section 69(a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended),” INEC stated on X Thursday afternoon.

Akpoti-Uduaghan has faced political challenges since February 28, when she accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment and abuse of office.

She alleged that Akpabio retaliated after she rejected his advances, attempting to intimidate her in the Senate—a claim he has strongly denied.

Her suspension from the Senate for six months led to the withholding of her salary and security detail.

In response, she reported the matter to the UN Inter-Parliamentary Union in New York, accusing fellow lawmakers of siding with Akpabio against her.

Following her allegations, videos emerged online showing large crowds allegedly signing a petition to recall her.

Some claimed her suspension had deprived the district of representation and that the Senate was not a platform for personal accusations.

Supporters of Akpoti-Uduaghan dismissed the recall attempt, calling it a politically motivated scheme orchestrated by paid actors. She also accused Akpabio of working with individuals in her district to remove her from office.
