Woman arraigned for allegedly injuring nine-year-old in Ado-Ekiti

A 35-year-old woman, Amaka Nwaogalanya, was arraigned on Thursday before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly inflicting injuries on a nine-year-old girl in her care.

The defendant, who has no fixed address, is facing a charge of assault. She pleaded not guilty.

According to the prosecutor, Inspector Elijah Adejare, the alleged offense took place between February 2024 and March 2025 in Ado-Ekiti.

He stated that Nwaogalanya punished the child in a manner that resulted in severe injuries, leading to her hospitalization. The prosecution cited Section 256(a) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

Chief Magistrate Kehinde Awosika ordered the defendant to deposit ₦300,000 with the secretary of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, Ekiti State Chapter, to cover the child’s medical expenses at the Ekiti State Teaching Hospital. She ruled that Nwaogalanya would be granted bail only after making the payment.

Additionally, the court required the defendant to present a surety of the same amount, who must be a blood relative. The case was adjourned until June 2 for further hearing.
