IGP summons emir Sanusi over sallah palace incident
Amid the ongoing leadership dispute in Kano State, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has summoned Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II for questioning regarding an incident that took place during the recent Sallah celebration at the palace.
A letter dated April 4 and addressed to the Emir indicates that he is to appear before the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja on April 8. The letter, seen by Peoples Gazette, stated that the meeting concerns an incident that occurred within Sanusi’s domain during the festivities.
“I have the directive of the Inspector General of Police, through the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department (FID), to invite you for an investigative meeting,” the letter read.
“You are hereby invited to the Force Intelligence Department, opposite the Police Force Headquarters, Area 11, Abuja, by 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2025. Your presence is crucial to ensure a thorough investigation.”
While the exact nature of the incident remains unclear, the invitation comes amid a tense power struggle between Emir Sanusi and his cousin, Aminu Bayero.
Earlier this week, police authorities banned the traditional Sallah Durbar in Kano, citing security concerns.
In March, the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal paused the enforcement of its judgment that upheld the Kano State government’s repeal of the 2019 Emirate Council Law.
That ruling temporarily halted Sanusi’s reinstatement as Emir of Kano, pending a final decision by the Supreme Court.
