Northern Governors decry Plateau attacks, urge enhanced security

The Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) has condemned the recent attacks on five communities in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau, calling them senseless and a direct threat to the region’s peace and unity.

In a statement issued from Gombe, the Forum’s Chairman and Governor of Gombe State, Inuwa Yahaya, expressed deep regret over the tragic incidents, which resulted in numerous fatalities and injuries, particularly among women and children.

The statement, shared by Ismaila Uba-Misilli, the Director-General of Press Affairs at Gombe Government House, conveyed Yahaya’s condolences to the affected families and the people of Plateau.

Yahaya denounced the ongoing violence against rural communities in the North, describing the bloodshed as a stain on both the region and the nation.

He stressed that the sanctity of human life should never be disregarded and called for universal condemnation of such brutal acts.

“Attacks on innocent citizens are utterly unacceptable,” Yahaya stated. “We must all unite in condemning these savage assaults.”

The NSGF Chairman also commended Plateau Governor Caleb Mutfwang for his prompt action following the attacks and acknowledged the quick response of security forces in restoring peace.

Nevertheless, Yahaya urged law enforcement agencies to strengthen their efforts to identify and bring those responsible for the violence to justice.

Yahaya emphasized the need for tolerance and peaceful coexistence, particularly between farmers and herders, to foster mutual respect and understanding across different communities.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Northern governors to tackling insecurity, enhancing social harmony, and promoting peaceful living throughout the region.

“As Northern governors, we remain resolute in our efforts to break the cycle of violence by improving security coordination, encouraging dialogue, and implementing policies that foster peace and unity,” he concluded.

Yahaya further called on all stakeholders to support the government’s initiatives by promoting peace, tolerance, and forgiveness within their communities.
