Female commercial driver seeks justice after alleged assault by Lagos street thug

A female commercial driver in Lagos State is calling for justice after allegedly being brutally assaulted by a street thug, commonly known as an Agbero, while trying to prevent the theft of her vehicle’s battery.

In a viral video shared on Tuesday, the visibly distressed woman, her face swollen and bruised, recounted the ordeal.

According to her, the incident occurred near the Oriental Hotel, where the man posed as a passenger heading to the Nigerian Law School.

She became suspicious after noticing the suspect through her rear-view mirror, allegedly attempting to remove her vehicle’s battery.

Upon confronting him, she said he turned violent—beating her, tearing her clothes, and dragging her in public.

“He started beating me when I asked him where he was taking my battery,” she said through tears in the video.

“Look at my face. He tore my clothes and battered me. Please, anyone watching this video, help me. Call human rights.

Is this how a woman trying to survive should be treated?”

The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, expressed frustration with the lack of support from transport unions and state authorities.

She claimed that despite paying daily levies to the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), female drivers like herself are left vulnerable to frequent harassment and attacks.

“This man must be brought to justice. Let him be an example. I won’t rest until I get justice.

Is being a female commercial driver in Lagos a crime?” she added.

She also alleged that the attacker is part of a syndicate known for targeting commercial drivers, often stealing vehicle batteries and other valuables.
