Overhead water tank collapse claims woman’s life in Lagos apartment
A 30-year-old woman, Cynthia Oguzie, tragically lost her life after an overhead water tank fell through the ceiling of her room in a Lagos apartment, crushing her as she lay on her bed.
Footage shared online captured the aftermath, with Oguzie seen motionless on her bed.
Although a voice in the video suggested she was still alive at the time, subsequent images showed her lifeless body in what appeared to be a hospital setting.
The incident occurred in the Lekki area of Lagos, just two months after Oguzie reportedly moved into the residence.
A Facebook user identified as Chukwuebuka Nathaniel, who claimed to be Oguzie’s brother, disclosed the incident online and blamed the tragedy on poor construction, accusing the property developers of using substandard materials.
“Beware of Lekki buildings and their water stands.
This is how they sent my sister to her early grave,” he wrote.
He also alleged that the landlord, currently outside the country, had entrusted the construction to an engineer and relied solely on photos and videos for updates.
As of Tuesday, the Lagos State Police Command had yet to officially acknowledge the incident.
However, photos and videos from the scene have been widely circulated on social media, sparking outrage and grief.
Oguzie’s funeral service is scheduled for Friday, April 25, according to a flier shared online.
The incident has triggered widespread criticism, with many Nigerians condemning building contractors and developers for alleged negligence and the use of inferior materials.
Facebook user Felix Amehnawon commented on the trend of unqualified engineers working on construction projects, while others expressed sorrow and called for accountability.
“This is sad. Someone must be held responsible,” wrote Benedict Chinonso, highlighting concerns over the durability of materials used in buildings in the area.
As of Tuesday evening, the Lagos State Government had not issued any official response regarding the tragedy.
