Ex-Lagos Governorship candidate Rhodes-Vivour receives traditional title in Badagry
Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party’s candidate in the 2023 Lagos State governorship election, was on Saturday honored with a traditional title in Badagry.
He was installed as the Obalefun-Agbaye of Obatala Worshippers Worldwide.
The title was bestowed by Obatala worshippers led by Oba Adedokun Ayinla, the Alase Oosa Agbaye Worldwide. Obatala is a highly respected deity in Yoruba tradition, revered for wisdom and compassion.
Speaking at the ceremony in the Ikoga area of Badagry, Oba Ayinla explained that traditional religious leaders across Yorubaland had unanimously agreed to confer the title on Rhodes-Vivour.
He also noted that the Akran of Badagry, Menu Toyi I, approved the conferment, along with the presentation of a crown and staff of office.
Oba Ayinla clarified that the title makes Rhodes-Vivour a leader among Obatala worshippers but does not equate him with a traditional ruler.
He emphasized that such crowns are symbolic and reserved for use only during religious ceremonies and festivals.
“This crown is for traditional religious purposes.
It must not be used to visit or challenge the authority of the town’s traditional ruler, who remains the custodian of our customs,” Ayinla said.
Following prayers and the presentation of the staff of office, Rhodes-Vivour was celebrated with music and dancing, joined by religious leaders and fellow worshippers.
In his remarks, Rhodes-Vivour expressed gratitude for the honor and pledged to uphold the responsibilities that come with the title.
He attended the event with his father, wife, friends, and members of the Labour Party.
